The addition of a staircase provides a new vertical circulation shaft.
Appearing more like a sculpture both externally and internally
this staircase has light pouring in through the skylight above and windows.
The heavy use of white allows the light to bounce, with perforated panels making the space feel less dense.
The building is characterised by the irregular flights and lighting of the stairs.
The main space running off the ground floor consists of mainly cork flooring and seating.
The only use of colour is this and the black framing around the window, creating an industrial finish.
Steven Holl has harmonised the new and the old with the use of shaping, colour and lighting successfully.
